- Oriental Bittersweet -
Noxious Weed
Oriental bittersweet was found in the county recently,
along the Hwy 95 corridor near Hwy 96. This is in the same general area where
Grecian foxglove was found 10 years ago. The plants are well established as a
landscape feature in some of the yards, but also invading the woods nearby. They
obviously have been around a while, but just recently identified. Oriental
bittersweet was placed on the noxious weed list last year, (2011) in the same
category as Grecian foxglove.

Bittersweet
There is a native species that is very similar in
appearance, and the best way to differentiate the two are the pattern of leaf
emergence.

Samples can be brought in to the Washington Conservation
District at 3300 frontage Road in Stillwater for identification but they should
include one of the key features which are yellow capsules with more than one
seed that opens to expose orange fruit in the fall. The leaves unfold book-like
when emerging from buds.
Identification from a twig with mature leaves is highly
unreliable.
Control Methods:
Mechanical: Pull or dig out before the fruit opens
Chemical: Treat cut stems w/ Glyphosate or Trichlopyr
(more effective)
Used or Expired
Medications ??
Washington County residents can now dispose of their unused and expired
medications at a year round collection drop box. Old and unused medicines in a
home can pose a risk for accidental poisoning, theft, and drug abuse. Instead of
flushing or throwing them in the trash, drop the drugs off for safe and free
disposal.
The Unused Medication Drop Box is located at the Sheriff’s Office Main Lobby in
the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) in Stillwater. The drop box will be available
7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Medications accepted include
prescription, over-the-counter, and pet medication. Staff at the Sheriff's
Office will secure the medications and take them to a waste-to-energy facility
that is licensed to burn this type of waste.
For more information on what’s accepted and what’s not, and preparing
medications for drop off go to www.co.washington.mn.us/meds
